In order to study in Canada, you will need a study permit. A study permit is a document which allows you to study in Canada. You can apply for one once you are accepted by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (CIC).
In this article, we’ve outlined a few steps you can take to obtain a study permit if you want to study in Canada.
While it might seem like a complicated process at first glance, once you understand the ins and outs of the application process, things become pretty easy.
There are many great resources available online that explain everything from how long it takes before your application is finalized all the way up until after arrival in Canada! Remember that as long as there’s been no criminal activity on your part during any point along this journey through immigration processes then success is within reach
Requirements to Immigrate to Canada as Student (Updated 2022)
1 – Choose a Program of Study
Before you start the application process, make sure to choose a program of study that is recognized by the Canadian government. This will help you get accepted into Canada as soon as possible and save time on your immigration process.
Choose a program that is not in high demand, as this will make it easier for you to get into and stay in Canada after graduation. You can also select something more affordable or one with fewer hours if you want to save money on tuition costs over time and are willing to do some work to make up for it (hint: volunteering). This may include tutoring students who need help with their English/French language skills or helping out at an organisation; these are great ways of earning extra cash while saving up money!
2 – Apply to a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)
If you’re interested in immigrating to Canada as a student, it’s important that you apply to a designated learning institution (DLI). A DLI is an institution that has been designated by the Government of Canada. This designation means that your education will be recognized and accepted by Canadian authorities so you can study in Canada without having to worry about being rejected or deported if they find out what kind of degree or certificate you have earned elsewhere.
The first step towards applying for entrance into one of these schools is getting yourself on their list of accepted applicants. The easiest way? Apply online! You can do this through their website or by visiting them in person at any time during business hours (usually 8 am-5 pm), which are usually Monday through Friday only.
3 – Prove you can support yourself in Canada during your stay
You must prove that you have the financial resources to support yourself and your family. You will need to show that you have enough money to pay for tuition fees, living expenses while in Canada and after graduating from high school or university. This can be done by showing bank statements, income tax returns and earnings reports from any employers over the past two years (if applicable).
4 – Get a Police Certificate(s)
The next step is to get a Police Certificate(s). A Police Certificate(s) is a document that shows you have no criminal record. You need to get one from every country you have lived in for 6 months or more in the last 10 years and it can be from the country where you live or even from your birth country if it’s different from where you currently live.
You need this certificate so that immigration authorities know that there are no police records against you, which means they won’t be able to deny your application based on this reason alone (even if other reasons exist).
5 – Pass a medical exam
To get a study permit, you will need to pass a medical exam. The Canadian Embassy or Consulate can help you arrange this with the help of their local partners in Canada.
The cost of the exam varies depending on where it’s administered and how much time is spent there (e.g., if it’s done at a travel clinic rather than by an official doctor). It typically costs between $100 and $300 USD but can range higher depending on factors like length and complexity of questions asked during the testing process.
6 – Prove you have no criminal record
If you have a criminal record, it’s possible that the Canadian government will not allow you to enter Canada. You can apply for a pardon or record suspension if your criminal record is valid and in good standing with the Canadian government.
If there is an opportunity for you to get a pardon or record suspension, we highly recommend applying as soon as possible after entering Canada so that your application gets reviewed.
7- Apply for your study permit
To apply for your study permit, you must first complete the application form and submit it to Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) by mail or courier. You can also send in your completed application at a CIC office or through an agent.
Once you’ve received notification that your application has been received, it will take from 3-6 weeks before they contact you with further information about what documents need to be provided along with it.
At this point, if everything checks out on their end, they will send an officer who will come out to meet with you to determine whether or not there are any issues with your application, which could mean anything from needing more proof of financial support than what was included in the initial letter sent out by CIC headquarters; having too many dependents as per Canadian immigration rules…or even having too many degrees altogether! If all goes well, they’ll issue a final decision after reviewing everything together over Skype video call sessions (or sitting down together in person).
